Dynamic vs Static QR Codes: What's the Difference

Two QR codes can look identical and behave completely differently: one printed on packaging works the same for a decade, another takes every scan to the newest version of a page. The difference lies in what they encode. Understanding the difference between static and dynamic QR codes helps you pick the right approach for print materials, event posters, and long-running content.

Static QR codes: content is baked in

A static QR code encodes its content directly into the pattern — most commonly a full URL. Once generated it cannot be changed: any modification means generating and printing again. Its strengths are simplicity and zero dependencies: no server is involved, and the pattern always decodes to the same content no matter when it is scanned. The trade-off is that the content cannot be updated remotely; if the target URL dies, the code is worthless and has to be reprinted.

Dynamic QR codes: redirect after scanning

A dynamic QR code encodes not the final content but a short link or an ID. The scan first reaches a server, which then decides where to redirect. Content can therefore change without reprinting the code: a redesigned landing page, a domain change, or a transition page after a campaign ends — all are just server-side updates. The trade-off is the dependency on a continuously available server: if the server is down, or the short link is blocked or expired, scanning behaves differently (such as showing an unavailable state), while a static code's pattern itself never stops decoding.

Comparing use cases

  • Static codes suit: long-lived content such as product packaging, nameplates, business cards, and books; destinations that almost never change; and cost-sensitive scenarios that do not want to depend on a service;
  • Dynamic codes suit: material whose destination changes frequently, such as promotional posters, event pages, and restaurant menus; scenarios that want to observe scan counts and traffic; and links that may need to be retired or redirected later.

Cost and dependencies

Once generated, a static code is "dead": there is almost no operational cost. A dynamic code needs a short-link service and a redirect server, with ongoing cost and maintenance responsibility. The two also differ in fault tolerance: when a static code's target fails, the only fix is reprinting; when a dynamic code's target fails, you usually still have time to change the server-side destination and limit the damage — provided you handle blocked or expired states in time.

A privacy reminder

A dynamic QR code turns every scan into a traceable request: the server can observe where visits come from, which means you must respect the destination site's rules and data protection requirements.
